Le Past Perfect Be + ing est un temps du passé qui permet de faire le bilan d'une action commencée dans le passé, tout en la considérant dans sa durée.
Ce dernier point le différencie du Past Perfect.

Il se forme avec l'auxiliaire 'had' ('have' au passé), suivi de 'been' (participe passé de 'be'), et du verbe à la forme 'ing'. Pour le verbe 'work', cela donne 'had been working'  à toutes les personnes :
